OpenSource Tools
Yesterday, I discovered a great open source program for connecting the visual aspects of these three mathematic topics.
Geogebra - website at: http://www.geogebra.at
from their website - GeoGebra is a free and multi-platform dynamic mathematics software for schools that joins geometry, algebra and calculus. It received several international awards including the European and German educational software awards.
Being an "old" math teacher and an open source advocate, I quickly downloaded and installed it. I found it very easy to work with and quite mature. A great boost for high school math classes. Further investigation discovered quite a community of users (nice forums) and a WIKI textbook being developed - http://www.geogebra.at/en/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
as well as a Newsletter -listserver@sbg.ac.at
I have often had trouble finding resources for the math teachers and this seems to really fill that more advanced gap. The release of online courseware and the development of this type of supportive programs is refreshing to see.
